Bad Luck

So a bunch of first year dental students and our professors went in on a bunch of powerball tickets. We all gave a dollar and two students went and bought all the tickets. 98 of them I think. Well we didn't win the huge jackpot but we didn't even get the powerball number once. With only 42 numbers to choose from, we should have gotten the powerball at least twice. What a bunch of bad luck. Gambling stinks. Yet I'm going to the Casino on Saturday night....

A bad week

So this week is not turing out to be one of the greatest. Today we were suppose to meet a friend for dinner and we totally forgot. Luckily he called when we weren't there so we were still able to go to dinner but I just feel horrible for forgetting. I have been the most forgetful person lately. The dumb thing is, is that I have everything written down in my planner, but I still forget. I look at my planner on a daily basis too.

Also today I found out that Brittany won't be in LaCrosse this weekend, the weekend that Maria, Theresa, and I planned on going to LaCrosse to watch Emily run, so now our trip to LaCrosse seems a little ridiculous so I cancelled it. I am really torn on this decision. I want to watch Emily run, it would be some good quality time with my sisters but Josh and I can't really justify spending the money(that we dont' have) on gas, plus it would be all day and I am getting behind with my school work so I could use the extra time to get caught up. I will get to watch Emily run when she runs right here in St. Paul so I don't feel so guilty about not watching her run. But no matter how I justify it, I still feel bad for canceling.

School has really been kicking my butt lately. It is a lot harder than I expected. I know I could be doing a lot better too, but it is hard to find the motivation. Its especially hard because Josh comes home from school and gets to spend his evenings doing whatever he wants (on the computer) and I need to be studying. Its just not fair. In the end we will both be Drs. but I feel like I am putting in so much more time. It just makes it hard to find the motivation to study.

The makings of a dentist

Well anatomy is done, but the hard stuff has only begun. My work load has quadrupled since anatomy. Luckily I have already had biochem and molecular biology, so hopefully that will help me when it comes to learning the material. I thought it would help for anatomy, but I don't think that it did.

Oral Anatomy has been very difficult, yet very rewarding. It is our only class in which we are doing anything dental related, not counting getting test questions for our boards from biochem, histo, and anatomy. Lately we've been waxing up the maxillary central incisor, or tooth number eight. Friday we have an annotation practical in which we have to assign numbers to the anterior teeth. This may seem easy, but when you just have a random tooth on the bench in front of you and you have to decide if it is maxillary or mandibular, incisor(central or lateral) or a canine and then you have to determine right from left, it is actually very difficult.

Waxing up a tooth is much harder than it sounds too. We have a partiallly cut down tooth and we have to build it up to fit in the mouth. It must touch the neighboring teeth at the exact points of contact. This means that the mesial and distal convexities must have their crests at exactly the right spot. Most people (including me) have a difficult time just drawing this, now imagine doing it in melted wax, that always seems to cool either too quickly or too slowly. Plus the terminolgy is still a little difficult. The fourth sentence in this paragraph is my new lingo. Everthing is refered to like this and the professors talk fast so good luck!!

As hard as dentistry has been I am really enjoying my time. Which is good, because this is how I spend all of my time. My days keep getting earlier and later. I'm not quite sure what Josh looks like anymore, but I could tell you the difference between and right lateral and right central incisor.
